Background information
Alka-Seltzer
Contains:
Aspirin (NSAID) 325 mg
Heat treated sodium bicarbonate 1916 mg
Citric acid 1000 mg
Alka-Seltzer in water contains principally the antacid sodium citrate and the analgesic sodium acetylsalicylate.
Fully dissolve 2 tablets in 4 ounces
When the tablet is dropped into water, its effervescence causes rapid disintegration. A series of chemical reactions results principally in the following substances: Sodium citrate (antacid), Sodium acetylsalicylate (pain reliever)
The aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is not an active ingredient in the effervescent action of Alka-Seltzer, but the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and citric acid are active.
The best temperature is room temperature. Cold water will slow down dissolution and warm water can make it foam terribly
When solid dry powders of NaHCO3 and acetyl-salicylic acid are pressed together to make a tablet, being solids, the molecules are not mobile enough to react. Adding water dissolves both and allows them to mingle and react. The disintegration of the reaction and the stirring from the gas bubbles help the "aspirin" dissolve in the water to measure it’s strength and make is acceptable to taste.
One of the main ingredients of Alka-Seltzer is baking powder. Baking powder is a combination of some acid (such as citric acid or tartaric acid) and sodium bicarbonate. When the tablet dissolves the components of baking powder (the acid and the base) react with each other and produce a gas (carbon dioxide).
When an Alka-Seltzer tablet is dropped in water, the sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, and the citric acid dissolve to produce carbon dioxide. This happens by the sodium bicarbonate and the citric acid of the tablet reacting in the water to carbonic acid.
